March On the Radar

MSEA testifies before the Civil Service Commission:
On Friday February 7th, 2025, MSEA President VanSickle testified before the Michigan Civil Service Commission (MCSC) in favor of the repeal of the annual reauthorization requirement. After hearing testimony from Unions, the MCSC voted 3 to 1 to amend Michigan Civil Service Rule 6-7 and Regulation 6.03, thus ending the requirement for employees to reauthorize their Union dues deduction on an annual basis. The process to sign up or end your Union membership is still the exact same within MIHR. This is the first significant development with the new labor friendly Commission, but we expect to collaborate on many more important issues moving forward.
Legislative Update:
On February 3rd the Michigan Senate filed a lawsuit against Speaker of the House Matt Hall for evading the state constitution and refusing to send nine bills passed by both legislative chambers to the governor. These bill's include our HB4665-4667 and HB6058 which amends the issuance cap. Judge Patel of the Michigan Court of Appeals heard verbal arguments from both sides on February 24th 2025. Judge Patel stated "I'm struggling with your argument that there's a firm demarcation between the 102nd and the 103rd Legislature and that the work done by one doesn't carry over to the next, especially in this context." Judge Patel ruled in favor of the Michigan Senate on February 27th.
